Bonjour from the beautiful Paris!
I have been in Paris for a bit more than one month and, if you know me at all, it should come as no surprise to you that I have done everything within my power to experience as much as possible over these past four weeks. It is very easy to understand why so many famous artists found their home here… you don’t have to search for beautiful things in Paris! Just open your eyes and you’ll find something that will make you want to draw or paint or snap a picture… even for those who are not artistically inclined. The food has been a totally wonderful experience as well! In my humble opinion, in fact, French cheese, bread, butter and pastries beat any I’ve ever tried elsewhere, hands-down! There is never a shortage of things to do here either! I’ve climbed the Arc de Triumph, picnicked by the Eiffel Tower and viewed famous pieces of art my Monet, Picasso and Van Gogh.
This has been such an adventure… but I’m not kidding when I tell you these are not the most amazing things that have happened to me here in Paris. The Lord called me here for a reason, and I knew that even before I even before I boarded a plane in Columbus, Ohio and flew across the ocean but I have to confess that I hadn’t begun to guess at His plan.
Maybe you are wondering, as I have, what difference can one girl make for Jesus? She only has one year and she is in such a huge city with such great need! Let me tell you that I want so desperately to make a difference! While I am so thankful that the team here is allowing me to feel useful and has allowed me to become very involved in their vision to build authentic relationships that lead to real life conversations about Jesus and His relevance in our lives… the real difference has been made IN ME!
I began this life with a wonderful family who brought me up to follow the Lord. I grew up learning about the gifts and personality God created me with and with the belief that Lord was going to use them for His glory. I was always excited about His plan for my life. Then… I lost my focus. I made choices that were not really bad but… I didn’t really ask Him about them. I wasn’t doing the WRONG thing but I wasn’t really focused on the Lord’s plan (read: the RIGHT thing) either. Over the past few years the Lord has lovingly freed me from a life of heartache and allowed me time to heal from some terrible wounds… but I’m realizing that I stayed stuck there. My sweet loved ones, I’m excited to say that since I have been here and my life has been focused on one thing: serving the Lord, He has awakened me! Isn’t the Lord so SO good?! He loves us so much that He will come and get us when we lose our focus! He does not save us so we can be comfortable! We were made for purpose MORE than we were made for painlessness!
“The word of the Lord came to me saying ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart, I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Jeremiah 1:4 & 5
It’s like He has lovingly placed His fingers under my chin and turned my head back to gaze on His face… back on the path He has set before me. I have to be honest and tell you that I am not sure what all of His plans are for me… but He is reminding me of who I have been created to be. We often get distracted, searching for anything that will fulfill us but I am learning that God has built me for a specific purpose and that when I allow Him to guide my steps it will be the most fulfilling experience imaginable.
“Ah Sovereign Lord,’ I said, ‘I do not know how to speak; I am only a child.’ But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say ‘I am only a child.’ You must go to everyone I send you and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you!’ declares the Lord.’
Then the Lord reached out His hand and touched my mouth and said to me, ‘Now I have put my words in your mouth! See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.
Jeremiah 1:6-10
What difference has my coming to Paris made? The difference is IN ME. He is uprooting my weeds, refuting my doubts, reminding me of my purpose and giving me courage for what is ahead.
“Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them. Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land. They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah 1:17-19
Please keep me in your prayers that I will “get myself ready.” God has already allowed me the privilege of getting involved in a WONDERFUL ministry with great people. Please pray that these ministries will continue to make a difference in the lives they touch!
The Lord IS making a difference wherever we invite His presence. Praise the Lord for He is alive and relevant and wants to speak to each one of us individually! Thank you so much for your encouragement and prayers!
